Welcome to Year 3

We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you, as parents, to Broomfields Junior School.

The children will have had a very busy few days and will be settling in extremely quickly to their new surroundings. The ‘Buddy’ system has allowed each of the Year 3 children to be paired up with a year 6 child during all of the changeover period from Infant school. I know that this point of contact has been beneficial to all concerned.

All of the Year 3 teachers are extremely grateful to the staff at Cobbs who have helped with the smooth transition by passing on comprehensive information about each child. You may also be interested to know that both sets of teachers will be meeting in a few weeks time to discuss how the children are working.

We are aware that there may be times when you have a concern about your child and if this happens please contact the school as soon as possible to arrange a mutually convenient time to discuss it with your child’s teacher. Parents’ evenings are also due to take place early in the first term, but please do not feel that you have to wait until then if a concern arises. Please use the children’s reading diaries/a letter as other means of communicating with us.

 P.E Kit

As your children begin junior school, we would welcome your help in encouraging them to become well organised and increasingly independent and initially they may require some support with this. One positive step is to ensure that they have the correct P.E and Games kit (Tracksuits are appropriate as the weather turns colder) all of which need to be clearly labelled with their name, as this will help us greatly. During the first term we will be enjoying outdoor games sessions. It is therefore essential that children quickly establish the routine of bringing kits in on a Monday and home on a Friday.

Reading and Reading diaries

All the Year 3 children will have brought home a reading book and reading record during the first week. We have given each child a book according to the level they were reading in Cobbs. If your child was a free reader in Cobbs we have carried out a reading test and given them a higher level book from our reading scheme, appropriate to them. All children in Year 3 will begin the year on a scheme reading book. We will test all children over the next couple of weeks to ensure that the levels are accurate. Each child also has a reading record. The teacher will sign this book in the weekly guided reading sessions (Days to be confirmed by class teacher next week). Please listen to your child read regularly and sign and date their diary when this happens.

Times Tables

Your child will have a weekly times tables test within the classroom. The tables to focus on initially are the 10s, 2s and 5s. The class teacher will keep a record of their progress and report their progress back regularly. The children will need to get 10 out of 10 twice before moving on.

Initially your child will be expected to learn their times tables and read their book regularly. The first times tables test will take place week beginning 15th September and the children will focus on their 10 x tables up to 10 x 10. The tables will be tested out of order and at pace.

The children will also have a weekly piece of homework to complete, which will usually be maths or literacy based, but may also cover other areas of the curriculum. This will be sent home on Fridays to return by the following Tuesday.

In the spring and summer term your child will have the opportunity to choose and complete one project per term. The details of the projects will follow and they will be in addition to the homework outlined above.

Your support with homework activities is greatly appreciated.

Your child will have a weekly recorder lesson and it would be extremely beneficial if your child owned their own recorder. We do have some in school but some children like to bring in their own. If your child has a recorder or if you can purchase one for them then please let them bring it into school for their weekly recorder lesson.

Parental Helpers/CRB checks

We are always looking for extra help from parents and would really appreciate it if you can give us some of your spare time. If you would like to offer your help then please ask in reception for a CRB form and complete it as soon as possible. Once the necessary checks have been carried out your child’s class teacher can arrange a mutually convenient time for you to come in. This term we will need help with bread and sandwich making. We will also be booking a special trip to the theatre to watch a pantomime just before Christmas, as a treat at the end of the children’s first term at Broomfields. There are also lots of other opportunities as the year progresses.
