Computing

Computing

“A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.”

The Milestone Documents below allow you to see how our computing curriculum is developed across the four year groups.  The key knowledge that is taught, vocabulary that will be used, all linking directly back to the National Curriculum.  If an area is highlighted, the knowledge will be covered in that unit of teaching.

Intent

At Broomfields Junior School, we recognise that technology is an integral part of everyday life and that children are growing up in a world where digital literacy is essential. Our Computing curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for life within and beyond school by developing high standards in digital competence, creativity, and problem-solving. We aim to foster independent learning and broaden pupils’ access to ideas and experiences through a rich and engaging Computing curriculum. By equipping pupils with the skills to navigate and contribute to a rapidly evolving technological landscape, we empower them to become safe, responsible, and confident users of technology.

Computing is delivered through the iCompute scheme of work, which provides a comprehensive and progressive curriculum from Years 3 to 6. This scheme covers all aspects of the National Curriculum and includes units on Artificial Intelligence, programming, data handling, digital literacy, and online safety. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and develop pupils’ computational thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills.

All year groups have access to a wide range of technology, including iPads, Chromebooks, programmable hardware, and additional resources from the wider TCAT community. This enables pupils to engage with a variety of software and devices, ensuring hands-on experience and practical application of skills. Technology is also embedded across other curriculum areas, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. Staff are supported with ongoing professional development to ensure consistent and high-quality delivery.

Pupils at Broomfields develop a strong foundation in Computing, enabling them to use technology confidently, creatively, and responsibly. They are assessed against milestone documents to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum objectives. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have experienced a broad, varied, and exciting Computing curriculum that prepares them to be digitally literate and safe online users. They leave Broomfields equipped with the confidence and capability to use technology effectively throughout their education and into adult life.
